On 25 November 2011 in Tirana, Albania the five Drin River Riparians signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a Shared Strategic Vision for the Sustainable Management of the Drin River Basin for the benefit of about 1.5 million people relying on the water resources of the basin for drinking water, agriculture, fisheries, industry and hydropower. Recent floods, in particular, have highlighted the need for such closer transboundary cooperation.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS ABOUT WATER, BUT MISSING FROM AGENDA

The world’s economic growth and social welfare depend on the sustainable management of the world’s water resources in the context of climate change, according to a statement issued by the Global Water Partnership (GWP).

The statement, delivered at the world climate change conference by GWP Chair Dr. Letita A. Obeng to the high level session, was the only one by an agency whose focus is on water.

The 8th Meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development was organized on the 15th of December 2010 in Cairo, Egypt.

The Meeting was organized by the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med), which jointly facilitate the Secretariat of COMPSUD.

Greece has this month become the 21st country to ratify a global water treaty designed to reduce conflict and guide joint management over rivers and lakes forming or crossing international
boundaries.

Drin Dialogue: 2nd Drin Core Group Meeting Ohrid, 3 November 2010, Ohrid, FYR Macedonia

The second meeting of the Drin Core Group (DCG) is organized in Ohrid, FYR Macedonia, on Wednesday, 3 November 2010. It is part of the activities of the Drin Dialogue for the establishment of a Shared Vision for the management of the extended Drin Basin and the project that supports its implementation, financed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Drin Dialogue 1st National Consultation Meeting in Ohrid, 2 November 2010, Ohrid, FYR Macedonia

The National Consultation Meeting in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, one of the activities within the Drin Dialogue, will be organized in Ohrid, on Tuesday, 2 November 2010, with the support and collaboration of the: Lake Ohrid Watershed Committee, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med), and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE).

On the occasion of the International Year of Biodiversity the European Water Partnership (EWP) is launching a photo competition named “Who cares…about water? Nature does!"

The photo competition is open to young people between 18 and 25 years old and the winners will be invited to receive attractive prices at the Aquawareness photo competition award ceremony, taking place in a European capital in autumn 2010.
